PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) insulated and jacketed cables offer a flexible and cost effective solution for low to medium voltage cable requirements commonly being utilized across an extensive range of applications.
PVC cables are widely used for fixed wiring and also flexible installations and are readily available in a range of sizes. The are typically available in White, Black and Grey jacket colours. At CDC, any colour option is a possibility.
PVC is widely used as it offers excellent insulation properties, chemical stability, robustness, has good availability and is generally perceived to be a cost effective material. It is inherently a flame retardant material however it does produce smoke when a flame is applied. It also offers a wide scope with regards to temperature resistance across a range of grades and cable be typically categorized as follows:
General purpose – Flexible: -15oC – +70oC
Heat resistant PVC: -15oC – +105oC
Arctic grade PVC: -40oC – +70oC

PVC is a material that meets many physical, performance, and safety requirements for cables, such as those listed above.

Generally, PVC offers the following key features:
Wide Operating Temperature Range
As a thermoplastic, PVC offers a wide range of operating temperatures.
Typically, PVC can operate easily in a range of -40°C to 110°C.
Generally speaking, the higher the quality, the wider the operating temperature range.
This characteristic alone makes it a viable option for different types of uses across the world, regardless of the temperatures.
Flame-retardant
PVC is inherently a flame-retardant material, meaning it is a combustion suppressant.
It prevents fire from spreading, but it doesn’t completely resist flames.
It is self-extinguishing, but if the fire continues, it will also continue to burn.
In other words, it may not worsen the situation, but it’s not completely immune to fire either.
Therefore, you won’t find this material in fire-resistant or high-heat cables.


Low-smoke
This is another safety benefit in the event of a fire.
These cables produce low smoke, so in a fire, they won’t contribute significantly to smoke.
That said, PVC cables are not halogen-free, so they pose the risk of emitting harmful gases.
This also limits their application to areas or industries where halogen-free cables are a necessity.
Abrasion Resistance
PVC, when used as an outer sheath, provides ample abrasion resistance.
It can withstand wear and tear from friction.
This property is particularly relevant for cables with PVC as the sheath, so it’s essential for the sheath to be made of high-quality PVC and tested for abrasion resistance.
Water Resistance
PVC cables are water-resistant to some extent.
Typically, water-resistant PVC sheaths contain additives to provide this property.
Therefore, this characteristic varies depending on the type of cable and the quality of its components.
However, those explicitly labeled as water-resistant will ideally meet standards for water-resistant cables.
